Outside the village there are a wide range of small villages and towns in the area which you might fancy a wander round. The following towns and villages are of particular note:

 

• Eyam - a pretty village famous for the plague and home to Eyam Hall & Craft Centre

• Buxton - famous for its water and Buxton Opera House

• Bakewell where you can get great fish and chips by the river and discover the difference between a Bakewell Tart and Pudding

• Matlock with the Heights of Abraham

• Chesterfield with its infamous twisted spire

• Crich with the National Tramway Museum that will transport you back into the past.

Stately homes are also prevalent in the area; Chatsworth House is probably the most famous but we also have Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, Renishaw Hall & Gardens, Kedleston Hall and Lyme Park - all accessible by car from Castleton.

If you fancy something different The Monsal Trail might be for you. It has a traffic free route for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users through some of the Peak District's most spectacular limestone dales. The trail runs along the former Midland Railway line for 8.5 miles between Blackwell Mill, Chee Dale and Coombs Road, at Bakewell. Discover the former railway route at your own pace and enjoy the four tunnels. There is even cycle & e-bike hire available at Hassop Station through Monsal Trail cycle hire.

Castleton is also not far from Sheffield and Manchester and it is well connected via the train which can be picked up at Hope Station. Both are cities are steeped in history and you might want to consider a guided walk if you fancy learning a little more about the place:
